What comes across your mind when you think of Atlanta Thanksgiving?
Maybe you’re thinking about traditions, all those delicious foods you can eat, or even looking for the best Black Friday deals. Fire probably didn’t come to your mind when you thought of Thanksgiving, but maybe it should. why?
Cooking is the leading cause of home fires, and according to the NFPA, Thanksgiving is the peak day for home fires. Here at Callaway Security, we can support you. The number of fire alarms that our monitoring center skyrockets around Thanksgiving are mostly due to kitchen fires at home. Fortunately, many of these signals are unintentional alarms and not full-blown fires. But with a house full of guests and a stomach full of carbs, night owls are often unwilling to respond to the range of their surveillance center.
Many Callaway Security customers are experiencing this holiday frustration, and the people who know it firsthand are the protection specialists at our 24-hour surveillance centers. They shared tips for avoiding kitchen fires and accidental Thanksgiving alarms, and what to do when the smoke alarm goes off.
Preventing Fires in Atlanta Thanksgiving Kitchen
The number one factor in fires in the kitchen is leaving an active kitchen unattended. Rather, bring some of the socialization into the kitchen. Here are more tips to avoid accidental home fires.
- Remove grease, dust, or leftover food from the oven and stove.
- Make sure you have a portable fire extinguisher that has not expired and is properly checked.
- Keep at least three children Feet away from the stove.
- When cooking with fat, keep a lid nearby in case you need to put out a fire.
- Turn pan handles inward so they are less likely to fall off the stove.
Responding to a Smoke Alarm
First things first, if your smoke alarm goes off, determine if there is a fire. This may sound obvious, but even if you’re pretty sure, be sure and double-check. Your top priority is always safely getting you and your guests out of the house.
Then, know the drill. There’s always a situation where you’ll accidentally set off your smoke alarm while you’re preparing a large meal, no matter how careful you are.
Smoke alarms going off when there’s no emergency can be frustrating, but knowing what’s coming next makes it much easier to respond.
Why Does My Smoke Alarm Sound When There is No Fire Burning?
In the event of an accidental alarm, you can temporarily silence your smoke alarm by entering your numeric password and disarming your system. Remember, it may beep again if there is still too much smoke. To prevent false alarms while preparing large meals, try the following:
- Have a smoke detector regularly to remove the build-up of dust and dirt.
- Focus while you’re cooking.
- Open your window/s before cooking.
- Install a fan close to your smoke alarm.
- Use a smoke detector cover from a hardware store or online.
- If you have Callaway Security smoke detectors, temporarily place your system in test mode.
IMPORTANT: Make sure you put everything back once you’ve finished cooking. Uncover your detector, put away fans, etc.
