The embedded document below is the original Honeywell Ademco user’s guide. It includes full instructions for system basics, keypad operation, arming and disarming, voice chime, voice message center, and emergency procedures.

How the VISTA-15P / VISTA-20P System Works

The VISTA-15P and VISTA-20P are hybrid hardwired/wireless control panels that divide your property into “zones,” each representing a door, window, motion detector, glassbreak, smoke detector, or other protection device. When a zone is violated, its zone number appears on the keypad so you know exactly where activity occurred.

These panels provide five burglary arming modes: STAY, NIGHT-STAY, AWAY, INSTANT, and MAXIMUM. STAY and INSTANT arm the perimeter while you remain inside; NIGHT-STAY adds selected interior zones; AWAY and MAXIMUM arm the entire system, with MAXIMUM removing entry delay for maximum security. You can also use CHIME mode to hear tones when protected doors and windows open while the system is disarmed.

Fire and CO protection (when installed) are always active and cannot be “turned off” with arming. The panels supervise smoke/heat detectors and dedicated life-safety zones separately from regular burglary zones, sounding distinct alarm patterns and reporting appropriately to the central station if monitoring is enabled.

Capacity-wise, the VISTA-15P supports up to 32 zones and up to 32 user codes, while the VISTA-20P supports up to 48 zones and up to 48 user codes, with multiple authority levels for different users. This makes the 15P ideal for most homes and the 20P a better fit for larger homes or light commercial sites.

Model-Specific Features — VISTA-15P vs. VISTA-20P

  • VISTA-15P: up to 32 zones (6 on-board hardwired zones, expandable with additional modules and wireless receivers).
  • VISTA-20P: up to 48 zones (8 on-board hardwired zones, expandable, plus support for many wireless zones with a receiver).
  • Supports a mix of hardwired and wireless sensors (with the proper wireless receiver/keypad).
  • Multiple keypad options: fixed-word and alpha keypads, including models that support voice chime and voice status.
  • Five arming modes for flexible protection while home, away, overnight, or on vacation.
  • CHIME and Voice Chime features to announce and/or tone door and window openings when the system is disarmed.
  • Master code plus numerous additional user codes, each with configurable authority levels.
  • Event history and alarm memory functions so you can review which zones caused alarms.
  • Optional remote services (with compatible communicators) for central station monitoring and IP/cellular reporting.

Arming, Disarming, and Burglary Protection Modes

Before Arming

Make sure all protected doors and windows are closed and the keypad shows that the system is “READY.” If the system is “NOT READY,” press the READY key to display which zones are open so you can close or bypass them before arming.

STAY Mode & INSTANT Mode

Use STAY when you’re inside but want the perimeter (doors/windows) protected. Entry delay is active on your entry/exit doors so you can still come and go. INSTANT is like STAY but removes entry delay, so opening an entry/exit door causes an immediate alarm — best when everyone is in for the night and no one should be coming in through those doors.

NIGHT-STAY Mode

NIGHT-STAY is similar to STAY but also arms selected interior zones (configured by the installer) that you want active while you sleep, such as downstairs motion detectors or interior doors, while still letting you move around in bedrooms or limited areas.

AWAY Mode & MAXIMUM Mode

Use AWAY when nobody will be staying inside. All perimeter and interior zones are protected and entry delay is active on entry/exit doors. MAXIMUM arms the system like AWAY but removes entry delay — typically used for extended absences or high-security situations, where opening an entry/exit door should trigger an instant alarm.

Quick Arming & Single-Button Arming

If your installer enabled Quick Arming, you can press # plus the desired arming key (AWAY, STAY, INSTANT, MAXIMUM) instead of entering your full code to arm the system. In many installations, the lettered keys A–D can also be programmed for single-button arming or custom functions.

Disarming

To disarm the system, enter a valid 4-digit code followed by the OFF key. If an alarm occurred while the system was armed, the keypad will show which zones went into alarm; repeat your code + OFF again to clear the alarm memory display after you’ve reviewed it.

Voice Chime, Voice Status & Message Center

Voice Chime & Door/Window Announcements

On compatible keypads, the system can provide Voice Chime, announcing which door or window has opened when the system is disarmed. This is an extension of regular CHIME mode and is especially useful in homes with children or multiple exterior doors.

Voice Status Key

The dedicated VOICE STATUS (or “*” status) function key lets the keypad announce whether the system is ready, armed, in alarm, or has troubles, and which zones are open. This is helpful if you’re across the room and want to hear system status without reading the display.

Voice Message Center

Some VISTA-15P/20P voice keypads include a simple Voice Message Center that lets you record and play brief messages (for example, “Kids: Don’t forget to lock the back door”). Messages are stored in the keypad and can be played back with a single keypress.

Troubleshooting Common VISTA-15P / 20P Issues

“NOT READY” Display

The system is reporting that one or more zones are open or faulted. Press the READY key to see which zone numbers are affected. Close the door/window, correct the problem, or bypass the zone before arming.

“CHECK” and Zone Numbers

A CHECK indication with a zone number typically means the panel has detected a wiring or device issue on that zone. This could be a cut wire, failed device, or tamper. Persistent CHECK messages should be inspected by a technician.

“BAT” (Low Battery)

A general BAT indication usually points to a low backup battery in the control cabinet. A BAT message with a zone number often indicates a low battery in a wireless sensor on that zone. In either case, batteries should be replaced to keep the system reliable.

“NO AC” Power Fail

The system is running solely on backup battery power because utility power is not present at the transformer. If NO AC persists, have the outlet, transformer, and wiring checked. Extended power loss will eventually drain the backup battery.

Frequent False Alarms or Beeping

Repeated alarms on the same zone or frequent trouble beeping can indicate a mis-aligned door contact, aging detector, or wiring fault. A service visit is recommended to identify and correct the underlying cause.

FAQ for VISTA-15P & VISTA-20P Owners

How many zones can each panel handle?

The VISTA-15P supports up to 32 zones. The VISTA-20P supports up to 48 zones. Both start with a limited number of on-board hardwired zones and can be expanded with additional hardwired modules and/or wireless receivers.

How many user codes can I program?

The VISTA-15P supports up to 32 user codes. The VISTA-20P supports up to 48 user codes. Each code can be assigned different authority levels, letting you control who can arm, disarm, change codes, or access advanced functions.

What is NIGHT-STAY and when should I use it?

NIGHT-STAY arms the perimeter and selected interior zones while still allowing movement in defined “safe” areas such as bedrooms. It’s ideal when everyone is home for the night but you want extra protection on specific interior spaces like downstairs hallways.

Can these panels still be upgraded or monitored?

Yes. VISTA-15P and VISTA-20P are widely supported. You can add or replace keypads, integrate IP/cellular communicators for modern monitoring, and in many cases reuse existing wiring if you eventually migrate to a newer platform.
